About Casa San Juan

guesthouse and retreat center in San Juan del Obispo

Tucked into the middle of a village, hidden behind corrugated tin walls, you’ll find a charming refuge from the bustle of Antigua.

As the doors open, a lush garden of fruits, flowers, and herbs greets you. The main house, designed and built by Guatemalan architect Federico Jimenez, features sliding glass doors and windows that create a sense of unity between the outdoor gardens and the interior space. The soothing sound of cascading water can be heard from the fountains in and around the house. There are several relaxing patio spaces to enjoy quiet time, to read, or to watch the hummingbirds and butterflies that are attracted to the many exotic, flowering plants.

About Ginger Hooven

yoga and ayurveda teacher

Ginger Hooven came to Guatemala in 1986 and like many who come, she had no intention of staying. But doors closed and other doors opened and here she is... residing in the same village she fell in love with 30 some-odd years ago. Much water has flowed under the bridge, but her entrepreneurship has flourished and Casa San Juan is her latest endeavor.

Ginger is an Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist who holds a Masters Degree in Ayurveda, is certified by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) as well as Yoga Alliance as a Experienced Yoga Teacher at the 500 hour level (E-RYT 500) Her hope is to share these sister sciences within her Guatemalan community. Casa San Juan is intended to be a place where one can come to rest and renew, to be nourished and rejuvenated, to be in a supportive setting with like-minded people.

user review

I have treasured my time here at Casa San Juan! So glad to have found this gem that offered us a place to stay just far enough from Antigua to be refreshing. Enjoyed an amiable staff, clean, gracious rooms, fantastic meals and notable yoga sessions with Ginger. Would love to return with my yoga group for special retreat!

Great morning yoga, sight seeing by day, then “home” for a wonderful dinner. Made the best vacation ever in extraordinary surroundings.
